The Mary Rose, a magnificent Tudor warship built in 1510, served the English fleet for 34 years before meeting its tragic end in the waters of the Solent in 1545. This evocative photograph captures the moment of discovery and raising of this historic vessel from the depths of the sea bed in 1982. The Mary Rose, a galleon of impressive size and stature, was a symbol of English maritime power during the reign of King Henry VIII. With her elegant sails spread wide, she cuts through the water with an air of grace and strength. However, on July 19, 1545, during the Battle of the Solent, the ship took on water and sank, taking with her hundreds of sailors to the bottom of the sea. The discovery of the Mary Rose in 1971 brought excitement and intrigue to the world of maritime archaeology. The ensuing rescue operation, which took place between 1979 and 1982, was a groundbreaking achievement in the field. With the help of modern technology and the expertise of archaeologists, the ship was carefully raised from the seabed and transported to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, where it is now preserved as a major tourist attraction and a symbol of England's rich maritime history.
