EDITORS COMMENTS
Napoleon Bonaparte's Coup d'état of 19th Brumaire: The Dissolution of the Conseil du 500 at Saint-Cloud and the Overthrow of the Directoire This historic print depicts a pivotal moment in the French Revolution, as Napoleon Bonaparte orchestrated a coup d'état on November 19, 1799, to overthrow the Directoire government. The event, known as the 19th Brumaire, marked the end of the French Revolution's radical phase and the beginning of Napoleon's rise to power. In the image, Napoleon is shown on horseback, surrounded by his troops, as they approach the Palace of Saint-Cloud, where the Conseil du 500, the executive branch of the Directoire, was in session. The council, composed of five hundred members, was a reactionary body that had become increasingly unpopular among the French people. Napoleon's forces arrived at Saint-Cloud on the morning of November 19 and demanded that the council surrender. The members, realizing that resistance was futile, quickly complied. Napoleon then dissolved the council and assumed control of the government, effectively ending the Directoire and paving the way for his own consulship. The 19th Brumaire was a turning point in French history, as it marked the end of the radical phase of the Revolution and the beginning of the Napoleonic era. Napoleon's coup d'état brought stability to France, but it also marked the end of the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity that had defined the Revolution. This print captures the dramatic moment of Napoleon's victory over the Directoire and the beginning of his reign as the undisputed ruler of France. The image is a testament to the power and ambition of one of history's most iconic figures and the tumultuous events that shaped the modern world.
