EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the twelve trailblazing women who made their way into the British Parliament during the 1931 General Election. From left to right, we see Mrs. Helen Shaw, Lady Gwendolen Iveagh, Miss Irene Ward, Miss Thelma Cazalet, Mrs. Mavis Tate, Mrs. Ida Copeland, Lady Nancy Astor, Mrs. Sarah A. Ward, Miss Florence Horsburgh, Hon. Mary Pickford, Katharine, Duchess of Atholl, and Mrs. Norah Runge. This groundbreaking event took place during the 1930s, a time when women's rights and equality were beginning to gain significant momentum. The women in this photograph are dressed in their formal parliamentary attire, including hats and long coats, standing proudly in a row outside the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. Among them is the first woman to be elected as an MP in the UK, Lady Nancy Astor, who made history in 1919. The other eleven women, including Helen Shaw, Ida Copeland, and Mary Pickford, were also making their mark in a male-dominated political landscape. The 1931 General Election marked a significant milestone in British politics, with these twelve women becoming the first large contingent of female MPs in the national government. Their election represented a major step towards gender equality and paved the way for future generations of women in politics. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the determination and resilience of these pioneering women and the impact they had on the political landscape of the time.
