22nd Dragoons Memorial, Cresserons, Normandy

The Dragoons were equipped with Sherman flail tanks. Rotating metal chains were attached to a roller at the front of the tank and as the tank moved slowly forward, the beating chains exploded any mines ahead. As with most specialised forces, the Dragoons rarely operated as a single unit but were attached to infantry forces to help to clear obstacles. In Normandy they were operational on both Sword and Juno beaches. Date: 2009

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant memorial stands in honor of the 22nd Dragoons, a British armored regiment that played a crucial role in the D-Day landings of 1944. Equipped with Sherman flail tanks, these brave soldiers were tasked with clearing minefields and making safe the passage for infantry and other allied forces on both Sword and Juno beaches. The Sherman flail tanks were unique in their design, with rotating metal chains attached to a roller at the front. As the tank moved slowly forward, the beating chains exploded any mines ahead, neutralizing the threat. The Dragoons were a specialized force, rarely operating as a single unit but instead were attached to infantry divisions to help clear obstacles and pave the way for advancement. The image captures the solemn and reflective atmosphere of the memorial, located in Cresserons, Normandy. The sun casts a warm glow over the scene, creating a sense of peace and tranquility that belies the fierce and dangerous battles that once raged in this very spot. The crosses and wreaths laid at the base of the memorial serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers, who helped to secure the Allied victory in Europe during World War II. This photograph, taken in 2009, is a poignant reminder of the heroism and bravery displayed by the 22nd Dragoons and the vital role they played in the D-Day landings. The memorial stands as a testament to their courage and a reminder of the price paid for freedom.
