EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, a delegation of veterans and members of No 3 Commando gather in the Mairie of Petiville, France, on the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the village. The occasion marks the inauguration of a memorial dedicated to Brigadier Peter Young, DSO, MC, who commanded No. 3 Commando during the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944. The image captures the solemn atmosphere as the group pays tribute to the brave men who fought to free Petiville from German occupation on 17 August 1944. The Mairie's walls display a photograph of the esteemed Brigadier, who led his commandos in the Ouistreham area with orders to clear the town and link up with the airborne forces at Pegasus Bridge. By the end of D-Day, they had successfully completed their mission. However, the high ground further inland remained in enemy hands, forcing the Commandos to continue their fight. The delegation's visit to Petiville serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers during World War II. Additionally, a Commando dagger, presented to the Mairie on the same day, is displayed in the photograph as a symbol of the indomitable spirit and unwavering determination of the Commandos. This image, taken in 2009, offers a glimpse into the history of the D-Day landings and the role of No. 3 Commando in the liberation of Petiville. The memorial stands as a testament to the bravery and resilience of the men who fought for freedom and the enduring bond between the people of Petiville and their liberators.
