The scene depicts a group of British gentlemen, dressed in the height of fashion, embarking on the Grand Tour, an educational journey through Europe and the Mediterranean. Their destination, an ancient tomb, is partially uncovered, its entrance guarded by a brick spade, a rope, and a pickaxe, remnants of the excavation process.
