EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "Chelonia" and created by Adolf Glitsch from an original illustration by Ernst Haeckel in 1904, showcases a stunning collection of Chelonia turtles and tortoises. The intricately detailed print features various species, each with their unique characteristics, showcasing the diversity and beauty of these ancient reptiles. The leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), depicted in the center, is the largest living turtle and the fourth largest living reptile, with a distinctive lack of a hard shell. The hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is critically endangered, with a distinctively shaped beak used for crushing the hard-shelled prey. The Argentine snake-necked turtle (Chacochelys bicarinatus) is also critically endangered, with a long neck that allows it to retract its head and limbs into its protective shell. The Mata Mata (Hydromedusa tectifera) is a semi-aquatic turtle with a unique camouflaging ability, while the geometric turtle (Psammobates geometricus) and geometric tortoise (Geochelone geometrica) are endangered species with intricate patterns on their shells. The Galapagos tortoise (Geochelone nigra) is a large, slow-moving reptile native to the Galapagos Islands, and the Dipsochelys dussumieri is a critically endangered tortoise from Madagascar. The common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is the largest and most widespread freshwater turtle in North America, easily recognized by its powerful jaws and webbed feet. This beautiful and intricate print is a testament to the natural world's wonders and serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures.
