EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases an enchanting collection of six different species of African butterflies. The first two butterflies depicted are the Clouded Bemastistes, or Bematistes umbra, with their intricately patterned upper and ventral wings. The following pair are the Common Glassies, or Acraea quirina, displaying their vibrant orange and black wings adorned with white spots. Lastly, we find the White Acraea, or Acraea circeis, with their pristine white wings and delicate black markings. The Clouded Bemastistes, also known as the Clouded Alethe, are native to the forests of Central and West Africa. The Common Glassies, or Common Acraea, are found throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. The White Acraea, or White Acraea, can be found in the savannas and forests of Central and East Africa. These beautiful butterflies are presented in their most intricate detail, with the handcolouring bringing out the exquisite patterns and textures of their wings. The lithograph itself is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship of the time, providing a window into the natural world and the wonders of the insect kingdom.
