EDITORS COMMENTS
Dom Miguel I (1802-1866), the enigmatic and controversial King of Portugal, is depicted in this early 19th century photograph in a formal portrait, wearing the regal uniform of the Portuguese Army. Born as the Duke of Braganza, Miguel rose to power following the abdication of his uncle, King Pedro IV, in 1828. His reign, which lasted until 1834, was marked by political instability and conflict. Miguel's ascension to the throne was not universally accepted, as many Portuguese citizens preferred Pedro's liberal regime. This led to the Liberal Wars, a series of conflicts that lasted for over a decade and resulted in Miguel's eventual exile. The young king, who was known for his authoritarian and conservative views, was unable to quell the unrest and maintain the loyalty of his people. Despite his controversial reign, Dom Miguel I remains an intriguing figure in Portuguese history. In this photograph, taken during his later years, he is shown in profile, his expression serious and determined. The uniform he wears, adorned with gold braid and military insignia, speaks to his military background and his commitment to the Portuguese Army, which played a significant role in his rise to power. Miguel spent the remainder of his life in exile, first in France and later in Austria. He died in Vienna in 1866, having been forgotten by many of his former subjects. This haunting portrait, however, serves as a reminder of a complex and fascinating chapter in Portuguese history, and the enigmatic figure of Dom Miguel I, who ruled as king during a time of great upheaval and change.
