The Four-in-Hand Club

The Four-In-Hand Club, a coach driving club, was founded in April 1808, by Charles Buxton, the inventor of the Buxton bit, along with some friends. The Club regularly drove as a group to Salt Hill, where they spent a convivial evening and the night, before driving back to London. The FHC encountered difficulties in 1820, revived in 1822 with slightly different club rules, but only lasting until 1826. Date: 1875

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, dating back to 1875, depicts members of the esteemed Four-in-Hand Club, named after the innovative driving technique using a single rein and reins looped around the bit, known as the 'Four-in-Hand' method. Founded in April 1808 by Charles Buxton, the inventor of the Buxton bit, and his friends, the Four-in-Hand Club was an exclusive coach driving society that regularly gathered for leisurely drives to Salt Hill. Here, they would enjoy a convivial evening and spend the night before making the journey back to London. However, the Club encountered difficulties in 1820 and was revived in 1822 with slightly altered rules, but it ultimately disbanded in 1826. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the elegance and sophistication of the members and their horses, as they participated in this cherished tradition of coach driving.
