EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored lithograph depicts Gabrielle de Bourbon, the esteemed wife of King Louis XII of France, also known as Louis II de la Trimouille. Gabrielle was not only a noblewoman of remarkable beauty but also an accomplished writer, renowned for her spiritual compositions. The image captures her in the grandeur of the royal court, dressed in the elegant attire of the early 16th century. Gabrielle de Bourbon was born in 1460 and married King Louis XII in 1476, when she was just sixteen years old. Her marriage to the monarch was a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening the Bourbon family's position in the French court. Despite her young age, Gabrielle proved to be an intelligent and capable wife, who played an essential role in the political and social life of the royal court. The lithograph is taken from Roger de Gaignieres' portfolio "Historical Costumes of France," published by Le Bibliophile Jacob in Paris in 1852. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the print bring the opulence and grandeur of the French court to life, making it a valuable historical document and an exquisite work of art. Gabrielle de Bourbon's spiritual writings were published posthumously and included poems, hymns, and devotional texts. Her works were deeply influenced by her Catholic faith and reflected the piety and spirituality of the time. Despite her prominent role in the royal court, Gabrielle is remembered primarily for her literary achievements, which continue to inspire and captivate readers today.
