EDITORS COMMENTS
Joan of Arc, also known as Jeanne d'Arc or the Maid of Orleans, is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard from the collection "Historical Costumes of France" published by Le Bibliophile Jacob in 1852. The young heroine is shown in full battle regalia, wearing a suit of armor over a yellow gaubisson, or pourpoint, a fitted tunic worn beneath armor. Her armor is adorned with intricate designs and embellishments, and she carries a sword in her right hand and a lance in her left. A cuirass, or breastplate, protects her chest, while spurs are attached to her armor for riding on horseback. Born in Domrémy, France, in 1410, Joan of Arc was a peasant girl who claimed to have received divine visions from Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret, instructing her to lead the French army to victory against the English during the Hundred Years' War. At the age of 17, she defied her parents and traveled to Chinon to meet with the Dauphin, who was skeptical of her claims but ultimately granted her permission to lead the army. Joan of Arc's military successes were remarkable, and she was instrumental in lifting the siege of Orléans and crowning Charles VII as King of France. However, she was later captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English, who put her on trial for heresy and heresy. Despite her courage and conviction, she was found guilty and burned at the stake on May 30, 1431, at the age of 29. She was later canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church in 1920. This image of Joan of Arc in her armor serves as a reminder of her bravery, determination, and the significant impact she had on French history.
