EDITORS COMMENTS
King Henry V of England, resplendent in crown, helm, and suit of armor, boards the Trinity at Southampton on August 10, 1415, preparing to embark on his campaign to reclaim France. Surrounded by his knights in plate armor, some donning comical helmets, the scene exudes a sense of grandeur and anticipation. This handcoloured steel engraving, created by John Leech based on an illustration from Gilbert Abbott A Beckett's Comic History of England, published in London by Bradbury, Agnew & Co. in 1880, offers a humorous take on the historic event. The King's marriage to Catherine of Valois, daughter of Charles VI of France, took place just over three years later, on April 23, 1445, at Titchfield Abbey. The marriage ceremony was officiated by the Bishop of Winchester, with the King's consort, Queen Margaret of Anjou, looking on. The Queen, depicted here in a hennin headdress, is shown seated on a cushion, surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting, courtiers, a falconer, jester, page, and a dagger-bearing attendant. The caricatured figures add a touch of humor to this significant moment in English history.
