EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a majestic scene of a Megaloceros stag and doe grazing peacefully in a prehistoric landscape. Belonging to the extinct genus of giant deer, Megaloceros was one of the largest deer species ever to have existed, with some species reaching up to 2.5 meters in height at the shoulder. The Megaloceros, also known as the Irish Elk due to its discovery in Ireland, is easily recognizable by its massive, palmated antlers, which could spread up to 4 meters in width. This beautiful reconstruction, taken from Wilhelm Bolsche's Prehistoric Animals (Tiere der Urwelt), published by the Reichardt Kakao Company in Hamburg in 1902, offers a captivating glimpse into the past. The intricate details of the Megaloceros' antlers, the textured fur, and the lush greenery of the landscape all contribute to a sense of realism and authenticity. The Megaloceros roamed Europe during the Pleistocene epoch, living alongside other now-extinct megafauna such as woolly mammoths and saber-toothed cats. Their extinction remains a mystery, with theories suggesting climate change, habitat loss, or human hunting as possible factors. Today, this magnificent creature serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity that once populated our planet. The chromolithograph process, a popular method for producing detailed and colorful prints during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, allowed artists and scientists to bring the prehistoric world to life in a way that was both visually stunning and scientifically accurate. This Megaloceros print is a testament to the enduring fascination humans have with the natural world, both past and present.
