EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the China Ship PH, a historic pub located in the vibrant Wapping area of London. The image, taken in the 1940s, shows the pub's facade in all its glory, with its ornate signage and red brick exterior. The China Ship PH was a beloved local institution, having served the community for many years before its unfortunate demise. The pub, which was owned by the Hoare and Company Limited, was situated in the heart of Wapping, an area rich in maritime history. The name "China Ship" was believed to have been derived from the area's past as a hub for trade with China. Sadly, the original China Ship PH was demolished prior to 1940, and a new pub was built in its place. The exact date of the demolition and the construction of the new pub is not known, but this photograph provides a valuable snapshot of the past. The China Ship PH was more than just a place to quench one's thirst; it was a gathering place for locals, a symbol of the community's history, and a testament to the area's rich maritime heritage. Today, the memory of this beloved pub lives on through photographs like this one, which transport us back in time and allow us to appreciate the history and character of Wapping and its people.
