EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts two fascinating marine creatures, the Red Rock Cod (Scorpaena papillosa) and the Red Handfish or Ruby Fish (Thymichthys politus), drawn from life by the talented Australian artist Louisa Anne Meredith. The illustration was published in her acclaimed book "Tasmanian Friends and Foes, Feathered, Furred and Finned," released in London in 1881 by Marcus Ward. The Red Rock Cod, with its vibrant red coloration and distinctive spines, is shown in its natural habitat among the rocks, displaying its striking appearance. The Red Handfish, with its unique hand-like fins and elongated body, is depicted in a more whimsical setting, seemingly posing for admirers in a Parisian café. The charming scene is reminiscent of an 1818 French café, with a grand palace in the background, complete with mille colonnes (thousand columns) and a royal throne. The café's proprietor, a celebrity waiter named Madame Romain, attends to her customers with grace and elegance, offering them tea, coffee, and ice cream. The waiter, dressed in the bon genre (good genre) French style, stands nearby, ready to serve. The illustration, hand-colored and engraved by Pierre de Mésangères and Le Bon Genre, showcases the beauty and intrigue of these two remarkable Tasmanian marine species, while also transporting us to a bygone era of French café culture.
