EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely handcolored engraving, created by Forget after an original illustration by Oudart for the "Universal Dictionary of Natural History" by Charles d'Orbigny, published in Paris in 1849, showcases two fascinating deep-sea fish species: the Ribbonfish (Trachipterus trachypterus) and the Red Bandfish (Cepola macrophthalma). The Ribbonfish, also known as the Longtooth Sleeper or Spinola's Ribbonfish, is depicted in the foreground. This elongated, eel-like fish is characterized by its long, slender body, which can grow up to 1.5 meters in length. Its coloration ranges from silver to blue-green, with distinctive vertical stripes. The Ribbonfish is a pelagic fish, inhabiting the deep waters of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It is an important food source for larger marine predators and is known for its ability to change color and shape to blend in with its surroundings. In the background, the Red Bandfish, also known as the Red-eyed Rabbitfish or the Red-banded Goodeid, can be seen. This fish, represented by the species Cepola macrophthalma, is a smaller, more compact fish, growing up to 30 cm in length. It is characterized by its bright red coloration, especially around its eyes and fins, and its distinctive, elongated dorsal fin. The Red Bandfish is a demersal fish, inhabiting the shallow waters of the Atlantic and Mediterranean Seas. It is an important food source for humans and is commonly used in aquariums due to its vibrant colors and interesting behavior. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the unique physical characteristics of these two fish species but also highlights the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century natural history illustrations.
