This striking image captures the moment of first contact between the Wampanoag tribe, led by their Sagamore or lesser chief Samoset, and the Pilgrim colonists in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on March 16, 1621. Samoset, an Abenaki from Maine, had learned English from fishermen and sailors off the coast, making him an invaluable intermediary between the two cultures. Dressed in a simple loincloth, Samoset approaches a group of Pilgrims, who are dressed in their traditional attire and gaze at him with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.
