EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the excitement and novelty of the opening of the Great Northern and City (Electric) Railway at Finsbury Park station in 1904. The image, taken just months after the line's inauguration on February 14th, 1904, shows Platform Number 1 bustling with activity. In the foreground, a Great Northern and City Railway (GNCR) driver and conductor stand by their electric train, ready to depart. The train, adorned with the distinctive GNCR livery, is surrounded by curious onlookers, some of whom are even climbing onto the train for a closer look. The Great Northern and City Railway, a precursor to the Piccadilly line of the London Underground, was a groundbreaking development in the city's transportation network. This line, which connected Finsbury Park with Hammersmith via King's Cross St. Pancras, was the world's first deep-level electric tube railway. The railway's innovative design, featuring electric trains and deep-level tunnels, revolutionized urban transportation and paved the way for the expansion of the London Underground network. The reverse of this postcard bears a handwritten message from one of the individuals in the photograph, dated May, 1904. The message reads, "Dear Mother, Your picture arrived safely. I am sending you one of the first trains on the new electric line. Love, [Name]." This poignant note adds a personal touch to this historical photograph and provides a glimpse into the early days of London's iconic underground railway system.
