EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of joy and playfulness among five of the children of King George V as they pose for the camera at their Scottish retreat, Balmoral Castle, in 1911. From left to right, we see Prince George, the eldest son and future King Edward VIII until his abdication in 1936; Prince Albert, Duke of York, who later became King George VI and reigned from 1936 to 1952; Princess Mary, the only daughter of the King and Queen Mary, who went on to marry the future King George VI; Prince Edward, Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VIII but abdicated after only a few months in 1936; and Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the youngest son of the King and Queen. The children are dressed in traditional Scottish attire, reflecting the family's love for the Scottish Highlands and their annual summer visits to Balmoral. Prince George and Prince Edward wear kilts and sporrans, while Princess Mary dons a tartan shawl and a bonnet adorned with feathers. Prince Albert, who was born in Germany, is seen in a dark suit, as he was not permitted to wear Scottish dress due to German customs. Prince Henry, who was born in 1900, is the only one not wearing a kilt, as he was too young to have one made for him at the time. The photograph exudes a sense of warmth and familial bonding, capturing the playful spirit of the young royals as they enjoy their time together in the picturesque Scottish countryside.
