EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print from the 1820s depicts the eccentric Englishman, John Mytton, in an attempt to jump his carriage over a tollgate, much to the annoyance of the toll-keeper and his doubtless exasperated passenger. Mytton, born in 1796 and passing in 1834, was a squire from the village of Acton Reynald in Shropshire, England. Known for his unconventional behavior and love for adventure, Mytton was infamous for his disregard for tolls and turnpikes. In this image, Mytton, dressed in a smock and wielding a whip, sits atop his carriage as it approaches the tollgate at Appley. The toll-keeper, with a look of disbelief and apperception, stands firm, determined to collect the toll. Mytton, seemingly unfazed by the toll-keeper's resistance, urges his horses to jump the gate, creating a scene of chaos and excitement on the busy road. The tollgate, a common sight on English roads during the 1800s, was a means for local authorities to collect taxes on transportation. Mytton's defiance of the tolls was a source of amusement and frustration for many, and this photograph captures the essence of his eccentric character and the tension between the traditional toll system and those who sought to evade it.
