EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite copperplate print captures the essence of community and charity embodied in the Lumley Almshouses, erected by Elizabeth, Viscountess Lumley, in the Pest House Field at Shoreditch in 1672. The almshouses were a testament to the viscountess's compassion and generosity towards the less fortunate members of society. The image portrays a harmonious scene of people from all walks of life coming together in the peaceful setting of the almshouses. The buildings, with their elegant arches and intricate details, stand proudly against a backdrop of lush greenery, symbolizing the hope and renewal offered to those who sought refuge there. Unfortunately, the beauty and significance of these almshouses were not to last. They were sadly pulled down in 1822, a loss to the community and a reminder of the transience of even the most noble of structures. The print serves as a poignant reminder of the past, a time when the spirit of charity and community was deeply ingrained in society, and when a single act of kindness could make a profound difference in the lives of many. The Lumley Almshouses are a testament to the power of compassion and the enduring impact of charitable endeavors. This beautiful copperplate print invites us to reflect on the importance of community and the role we can play in making a difference in the lives of those around us.
