Newgate Prison Courtyard, 1900: A Symbol of Reform and Compassion Newgate Prison, originally the principal west gate of London, stands proudly in this late 19th-century photograph. Once an infamous symbol of law and punishment, Newgate was notorious for its inhumane conditions and overcrowding.
