EDITORS COMMENTS
This panoramic view captures the Leopoldville station, the first major colonial post in the Congo, as it appeared in 1884 from Ngaliema Bay. Established by Henry Morton Stanley in 1881 and delegated to Anthony Swinburne, this trading post played a significant role in the European exploration and colonization of the Congo during the late 19th century. Located near Stanley Pool, Leopoldville was a bustling hub of activity, with steamers and boats anchored at the port, and European houses and trading posts lining the riverbank. The hill in the background offers a striking contrast to the flat terrain surrounding the station, while the Congo River, a major economic artery, flows gently in the foreground. The image is taken from El Congo y la Creacion del Estado Independiente de este nombre (The Congo and the Founding of its Free State), a book edited in Barcelona around 1890. The caption does not mention the Belgian Congo Company, which later played a significant role in the colonization of the region, but rather focuses on the early exploration and establishment of the colonial post. The panoramic view offers a glimpse into the age of colonialism and the economic, geographical, and navigational challenges faced by European explorers and settlers in Africa during this period.
