Photographs of the Rufford hounds, with huntsmen, in front of Thoresby Park, and Earl Manvers on horseback, Master of the Rufford Hunt. From a series of articles, Famous Hunts at home'. The article, written and illustrated by Leonard Willoughby, begins with the description, This season the Rufford are, indeed, fortunate in again having at the head of affairs Earl Manvers, the owner of Thoresby Park and a considerable amount of land over which hounds now hunt. Though the hunt lays in the centre of the "Dukeries"- of which Thoresby is one of the great houses- still, the Dukes of Portland and Newcastle do not hunt, nor does Lord Savile, though they are all supporters of the hunt. Charles William Sydney Pierrepont, 4th Earl Manvers (1854-1926). Date: 1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of the Rufford Hunt in Nottinghamshire during the 1910 season. The image features the Rufford hounds and their huntsmen gathered in front of the magnificent Thoresby Park, with Earl Manvers, the Master of the Hunt, riding proudly on horseback. The Duke of Newcastle, Duke of Portland, and Lord Savile, who are all supporters of the hunt but do not participate themselves, are not present in this scene. Earl Manvers, Charles William Sydney Pierrepont (1854-1926), was a significant figure in the hunting community and the owner of Thoresby Park and a considerable amount of surrounding land. The Rufford Hunt, which is centrally located in the "Dukeries" of Nottinghamshire, is known for its rich history and tradition. The photograph, taken in 1910, captures the excitement and energy of the hunt as the hounds and huntsmen prepare for the day's pursuit. The landscape of Thoresby Park, with its rolling hills and beautiful architecture, serves as a fitting backdrop to this quintessential English hunting scene. Leonard Willoughby, a renowned photographer of the time, captured this moment in history, preserving it for future generations to appreciate the beauty and tradition of the Rufford Hunt in the early 20th century.
