EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning Woodpecker Tapestry, designed by the renowned British artist and designer William Morris in 1885, is a captivating embodiment of the transformative power of mythology. Inspired by a story from Ovid's Metamorphoses, the tapestry depicts the tale of King Picus, who was once a powerful monarch but was transformed into a woodpecker by a vengeful sorceress. The text inscribed on the tapestry, "I once a king and chief now am the tree bark's thief ever twixt trunk and leaf chasing the prey," poignantly captures the essence of Picus' new existence. The woodpecker, with its unyielding determination, is seen relentlessly pecking at the tree bark, a stark contrast to his regal past. William Morris was deeply inspired by the rich stories and symbolism found in Ovid's Metamorphoses, and this tapestry is a testament to his artistic vision. The intricate design, with its vibrant colors and intricate patterns, is a visual feast for the eyes. The tapestry is part of the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, and its timeless beauty continues to captivate audiences more than a century after it was created. The Woodpecker Tapestry is a powerful reminder of the enduring allure of mythology and the transformative power of art. It invites us to reflect on the complexities of human nature and the ways in which we can be shaped by our experiences, both good and bad. Whether hanging in a grand hall or a cozy living room, this tapestry is sure to inspire awe and wonder in all who behold it.
