EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the ceremonial scene at the opening of the annual Colchester Oyster Fishery, an age-old tradition that takes place on the first Friday of September off the coast of Mersea Island in the Colne estuary. In this historical image from 1909, the Mayor of Colchester, dressed in full civic regalia, and accompanied by the Town Clerk and Town Sergeant, embark on an oyster dredger to mark the beginning of the oyster season. The Mayor, with great fanfare, dredges up the first oyster of the year and consumes it, signifying the official opening of the fishery. The ceremony, steeped in history and tradition, dates back to medieval times and is a cherished custom in the town. The group then proceeds to an oyster lunch to celebrate the occasion, further emphasizing the importance of this industry to the local community. The Pyefleet Channel of the Colne estuary, where the ceremony takes place, is a picturesque setting for this annual event, with the oyster dredger, nets, and customs boats adding to the scene's charm. The Mayor, Town Clerk, and Town Sergeant are seen here in their formal attire, adding to the ceremonial atmosphere. The image is a testament to the rich history and customs of Colchester, a town steeped in maritime tradition. The opening of the Colchester Oyster Fishery is a reminder of the town's proud past and its continued connection to the sea and the fishing industry.
