Orient Express in Snow
The Simplon-Orient Express train, snowbound at the village station of Cherkeskoy, sixty miles from its final destination, Constantinople (Istanbul). The train left Paris on 29 January and was due to arrive at Constantinople on 1 February. Instead, it remained snowed up for ten days. A train travelling in the opposite direction was similarly snowbound alongside it for 96 hours. With no heating on the train, the passengers of both trains huddled together in the station buffet, passing the time by playing cards, reading, listening to gramophone music and dancing, including improvised performances by a German ballerina

A Blizzard's Grasp: The Unforgettable Saga of the Orient Express in Snow, February 1929 Amidst the serene stillness of a snow-laden landscape, the iconic Orient Express train stands defiant against the elements, sixty miles short of its final destination, Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul). The photograph, captured in the historic village station of Cherkeskoy, portrays an extraordinary tale of human resilience and camaraderie in the face of nature's wrath. The Orient Express, which had departed from Paris on 29 January 1929, was due to arrive at its destination on 1 February. However, an unprecedented blizzard had other plans. For ten days, the train remained snowbound, its progress halted by the relentless onslaught of winter. A train traveling in the opposite direction was similarly ensnared, sharing the bitter chill and the arduous wait. As the mercury plummeted and the train's heating systems succumbed to the cold, passengers huddled together in the station buffet, seeking refuge from the biting wind. The days passed in a blur of activities, as they passed the time with games of cards, engrossing themselves in books, and even dancing to the tunes of gramophone records. The spirit of the passengers was further uplifted by an impromptu performance by a German ballerina, who captivated her audience with her grace and poise. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the indomitable human spirit, which, even amidst the harshest of conditions, can find joy and camaraderie. The Orient Express in Snow, a testament to the enduring allure of the train journey and the unyielding power of human spirit, remains an unforgettable chapter in the annals of history.
