EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the moment of triumph and heroism embodied by Peggy Prince, a remarkable woman who risked her own life during the tumultuous days of World War II. In the autumn of 1940, during the height of the Battle of Britain, a Royal Air Force bomber crashed into the English Channel, leaving its crew stranded and fighting for survival. With the wireless operator's life hanging in the balance, Peggy, a local resident of Kent, took action. Undeterred by the treacherous waters and the looming threat of enemy aircraft, Peggy embarked on a daring rescue mission. She made two perilous journeys out to sea in her small canoe, braving the rough waves and strong winds to reach the distressed crew. Her courage and determination paid off, as she successfully rescued the wireless operator and brought him back to safety. In recognition of her extraordinary heroism, Peggy was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) by King George VI. This prestigious honor was bestowed upon her for her "gallant and selfless actions" during the war. The photograph encapsulates the spirit of resilience and bravery that defined the British people during this dark period in history. Peggy Prince's story stands as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the power of individual acts of heroism.
