EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of innovation and technological advancement that defined the British Army Equipment Exhibition held at Aldershot from 23-27 June 1980. At the heart of the image are four iconic vehicles of the Alvis brand: the Alvis FV102 Striker, FV104 Samaritan, FV106 Samson, and FV103 Spartan. The Alvis Striker, a tracked armored personnel carrier, was a key component of the British Army's mechanized infantry formations during the late 1970s and 1980s. Its successor, the Samaritan, is visible in the background, showcasing its unique ability to carry and deploy a 13.2-meter bridge, expanding the army's mobility and versatility. The FV106 Samson, a heavy-lift cargo carrier, is depicted in the lower left corner of the image. This versatile vehicle was capable of carrying a payload of up to 18 tons and was widely used to transport supplies and equipment to various locations. The FV103 Spartan, a light armored personnel carrier, is seen in the upper right corner of the photograph. This vehicle offered excellent protection for its occupants and was a valuable asset in reconnaissance and patrol missions. The presence of these vehicles at the British Army Equipment Exhibition underscored the importance of ground forces technology and innovation during this period. The exhibition provided an opportunity for military personnel, industry experts, and the public to witness the latest advancements in aviation, aeronautical engineering, and ground forces equipment. This photograph is a testament to the significant role that Alvis vehicles played in the British military during the late 1970s and 1980s and serves as a reminder of the technological progress that has shaped modern military capabilities.
