EDITORS COMMENTS
On the Ponte della Paglia: Going to the Council" is an engraving derived from a painting by the British artist Henry Wallis, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1876. The scene depicted in this historical artwork transports us back to the political intrigues of 16th century Venice. The bridge in the background of the image is the iconic Bridge of Sighs, a popular tourist attraction today, but in the past, it was the site of many a clandestine meeting and secretive council sessions. The Ponte della Paglia, or Bridge of Straw, is the bridge shown in the foreground, where the figures in the painting are making their way towards the Council. The devious nature of Venetian politics is vividly captured in this engraving. Wallis masterfully depicts the somber mood of the scene, with the figures dressed in heavy robes and hats, their faces etched with concern and determination. The bridge's name, Ponte della Paglia, refers to the straw mats that were once used to cover the floor of the bridge to muffle the sound of footsteps and prevent eavesdropping. This artwork, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1875 under the title "On the Ponte della Paglia: Going to the Council," is a testament to the rich history and intrigue of Venice. The Bridge of Sighs, with its ominous reputation, serves as a fitting backdrop to this scene, reminding us of the political machinations that once took place in this beautiful and historic city. The engraving, produced in 1876, is a meticulously detailed reproduction of Wallis' painting, providing us with a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the complex and fascinating history of Venice.
