Louis Alexander Mountbatten, 1st Marquess of Milford Haven, (1854 1921), formerly Prince Louis Alexander of Battenberg, German prince related to the British Royal Family after marrying a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, Princess Victoria of Hesse. Appointed First Sea Lord in 1912, the professional head of the British naval service, but his German origins forced his retirement at the start of World War One when anti-German feeling was running high. Prince Louis is the grandfather of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Date: c.1912
