EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Prince William of Wied, also known as Wilhelm Friedrich Heinrich, Princ Vidi or Princ Vilhelm Vidi (1876-1945), during his brief reign as Sovereign of the Principality of Albania from March 7, 1914, to September 3, 1914. Born into the German House of Wied, Prince William assumed the Albanian throne following the abdication of Prince Wilhelm I. His reign, however, was short-lived as he was forced to leave for exile due to political instability and opposition from local leaders. In this image, the Prince is seen with his wife, Princess Sophie of Schönburg-Waldenburg (1873-1932), who was the daughter of Prince Heinrich XXII Reuss of Plauen. Their marriage took place on July 13, 1902, in Vienna, Austria. The Princess, who was known for her beauty and intelligence, became the first queen consort of Albania. Prince William and Princess Sophie's reign was marked by efforts to modernize and stabilize the young nation. However, their rule was met with resistance from various factions, ultimately leading to the Prince's departure. Despite the short duration of their reign, the couple remains an intriguing part of Albanian history. This photograph, taken in 1914, offers a glimpse into the lives of these historical figures during their time as the Prince and Princess of Albania.
