EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph from 1915, Princess Arthur of Connaught, Duchess of Fife, and her only son, Alastair Arthur, Earl of Macduff, share a tender moment of play and bonding. The Princess, who was born as Alexandra of Wales and was the elder daughter of Princess Louise of Wales, Duchess of Fife, is seen seated on a plush chair, dressed elegantly in a long-sleeved blouse and a flowing skirt. Her striking features, reminiscent of her royal heritage, are accentuated by her expressive eyes and the elegant pearls adorning her neck. The focus of the image, however, is on her cherubic little son, Alastair, who sits on a charming wheeled push-along toy horse. With a mischievous grin on his face, he holds onto the reins of the toy, ready to take it for a spin. The intricate design of the toy horse, with its detailed paintwork and intricate wheels, adds to the whimsical charm of the scene. The Princess's marriage to her cousin, Prince Arthur of Connaught, had taken place in 1913, and following her father's death at Aswan in 1912, she was granted the right to inherit the Fife dukedom in her own name. She was henceforth known as Princess Arthur of Connaught. This photograph captures a precious moment in their lives, as the Princess dotes on her young son and enjoys the simple pleasures of childhood. The image is a poignant reminder of the close bond between a mother and her child, and the enduring magic of playtime.
