EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intense moment of battle as Private J Connington of Selby, Yorks, wields his Sten gun during the action at Arnhem on September 20, 1944. The image was taken by Sgt D M Smith of the Army Film and Photographic Unit, who skillfully documented the events of Operation Market Garden, a pivotal campaign in the Second World War. The 1st Airborne Division, to which Private Connington belonged, was dropped behind enemy lines in an attempt to secure key bridges and expand the Allied front in North West Europe. However, the operation did not go according to plan, and the division faced heavy resistance and was eventually forced to withdraw. This photograph is one of 75 official images and photocopies in a collection that provides a unique insight into the experiences of the British soldiers during this crucial period. The collection, which was previously owned by the late Christopher Keegan, a veteran of the Parachute Regiment, offers a poignant reminder of the bravery and determination displayed by the troops during Operation Market Garden. The photograph's authenticity is assured, as it was taken by a member of the Army Film and Photographic Unit, an official military organization responsible for recording the history of the British armed forces. This image, along with the others in the collection, is an invaluable historical resource that sheds light on the events of this significant military campaign.
