EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and poised photograph, Queen Mary (1867-1953), the consort of King George V, is seen with her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, Duchess of York (later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, 1900-2002). The image captures a tender moment between the two royal women, as they sit side by side, dressed in their finest attire, with the regal air of the British monarchy on full display. Queen Mary, a German princess by birth, was a beloved and influential figure in the British royal family. She was known for her impeccable style, her dedication to tradition, and her charitable work. Her relationship with her eldest son, the future King George VI, was not always an easy one, but they grew closer following the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936. Elizabeth, the Duchess of York, was the former wife of the abdicated king, and her position in the royal family was uncertain following her husband's abdication. She was welcomed back into the fold by her mother-in-law, Queen Mary, who took Elizabeth under her wing and helped her adjust to her new role as the wife of the new king, George VI. This photograph, taken in the late 1930s, shows the two women in a moment of quiet companionship, their hands resting on each other's knees, their expressions thoughtful and serene. It is a testament to the resilience and grace of the British monarchy, and the enduring bond between a mother and a daughter-in-law. The image is a reminder of a bygone era, one filled with tradition, elegance, and the unwavering strength of the British royal family.
