EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the majestic R.M.S. Berengaria, a former German passenger liner named S.S. Imperator until its acquisition by the Cunard Line in 1931, as it gracefully enters the harbour during the 1930s. Originally launched in 1912 for the Hamburg-America Line, the Berengaria was one of the largest and most luxurious ocean liners of her time. With a gross register tonnage of over 22,000 tons, she could accommodate more than 1,500 passengers in her opulent cabins and public spaces. During her tenure with the Cunard Line, the Berengaria became a popular choice for transatlantic crossings, offering passengers a taste of elegance and comfort as they journeyed between Europe and North America. The ship's distinctive red funnel, adorned with the Cunard crest, became a familiar sight on the high seas. As the 1930s progressed, the Berengaria continued to serve her passengers faithfully, providing a vital link between the old world and the new. However, her glory days were numbered, and she was eventually scrapped in 1938. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the grandeur and romance of ocean travel during the era of the great passenger liners. The R.M.S. Berengaria's legacy lives on, inspiring a sense of wonder and nostalgia for a bygone age of luxury and adventure on the high seas.
