EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the first prototype English Electric Lightning T4, XL628, takes to the skies above, leaving a trail of vapor in its wake. Accompanying XL628 in this historic flight is the development Lightning F1, XG331, which can be seen gracefully following behind. The English Electric Lightning was a groundbreaking British jet fighter aircraft, designed and manufactured by English Electric Aviation Company. First flown on August 4, 1954, the Lightning was a two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather interceptor that set new standards for speed and agility. With a top speed of over Mach 2, it was one of the fastest operational aircraft in the world during its time. The T4 variant, represented here by XL628, was an evolution of the original Lightning F.1 design, featuring improved avionics and more powerful engines. The aircraft in this image underwent extensive flight testing to evaluate its capabilities and refine its design. XG331, the development Lightning F1, can be seen in the background, providing valuable data and comparison during the test flights. The two aircraft worked in tandem, with XG331 often flying in formation with XL628 to gather data on performance and handling characteristics. This photograph captures a significant moment in the history of aviation, showcasing the first prototype of the English Electric Lightning T4 in flight alongside its development counterpart. The image serves as a testament to the innovation and engineering prowess of the time, paving the way for future advancements in aircraft design and performance.
