This promotional postcard showcases the iconic figure of Sherlock Holmes, brought to life on stage by the remarkable duo of Arthur Conan Doyle and William Gillette. The image, dated 1903, was produced in the height of Holmes' popularity during the early 1900s. Gillette, a leading man of his time, is seen here in character, captivating the audience with his stage interpretation of the beloved detective. The production of Sherlock Holmes, penned by Arthur Conan Doyle, first premiered in England at the Shakespeare Theatre in Liverpool on September 2nd, 1901, and later transferred to the Lyceum Theatre on the 9th of the same month. Gillette's touring production then graced the Kings Theatre in Edinburgh on August 19th, 1903. Gillette's theatrical portrayal of Sherlock Holmes left a lasting impact on audiences, making him synonymous with the character.
