EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases the Small Temple or Temple of Hathor at Abu Simbel, Egypt, dating back to the 19th Dynasty of the New Empire, around the 13th century BC. The temple, dedicated to the goddess Hathor, is renowned for its intricate hieroglyphic and hieratic inscriptions and stunning architectural design. In this particular scene, two prominent Egyptian deities, Set (left) and Horus (right), are depicted in an act of reverence towards Pharaoh Ramses II. Set, the god of the desert, chaos, and storms, is often portrayed as a mummified or animal-headed figure, in this case, with the form of a donkey or ass. Horus, the god of the sky, the sun, and the protector of pharaohs, is usually represented as a falcon or a falcon-headed man. Both deities are shown presenting their symbols of power to Ramses II. Set holds the crook, a symbol of power and authority, while Horus offers the flail, a symbol of the harvest and fertility. The pharaoh, wearing the pschent crown, which signifies the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt, sits majestically between them. The gods' double perspective adds depth and dimension to the image, emphasizing the divine connection between the ruler and the divine beings of ancient Egyptian mythology. The intricate hieroglyphic and hieratic writings on the temple walls further underscore the religious and cultural significance of this remarkable monument.
