EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph depicts Stegosaurus ungulatus, a dubious species of the iconic dinosaur genus Stegosaurus. The image is based on an illustration created by J. Smit for H.N. Hutchinson's "Extinct Monsters and Creatures of Other Days," published by Chapman and Hall in London in 1894. The Stegosaurus ungulatus is shown with distinctive plates running down its back, spiked thagomizer at the end of its tail, and small plates on its limbs. However, this particular species is considered dubious due to limited fossil evidence supporting its existence. Stegosaurus, meaning "roofed lizard," is a well-known dinosaur from the Late Jurassic period, approximately 155 to 150 million years ago. Fossils of this dinosaur have been discovered primarily in North America and Europe. Stegosaurus is recognized by its unique features, including the plates along its back, which may have functioned for thermoregulation or display, and its distinctive arm spikes. The study of dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures has been a source of fascination for scientists, artists, and the public for over a century. This lithograph is a testament to the enduring interest in the history of paleontology and the prehistoric world. The intricate details in the illustration showcase the skill and artistry of J. Smit and the dedication of H.N. Hutchinson to documenting the wonders of the natural world, even those that remain a mystery.
