EDITORS COMMENTS
Sultan Selim I, also known as Yavuz, or the Stern, the Steadfast, or the Grim, sits proudly atop his horse as he leads his formidable Ottoman forces in the conquest of Egypt in 1516. The Mamluk Sultanate, which had ruled Egypt for over 250 years, was no match for the military might and strategic prowess of the Ottoman Empire under Selim I. With a determined gaze and clenched fist, Selim I signifies his unwavering commitment to expanding the Ottoman territories and solidifying his rule. Surrounded by his trusted advisors, including Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha (standing to his right) and the Khan of the Janissaries, Hadim Sinan Pasha (riding to his left), Selim I confidently directs his troops towards their objective: the capture of Cairo and the conquest of the Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina (Ul Haramain). The Ishraqi Shari'f, the spiritual leader of the Arab world, is shown in submission at Selim I's feet, symbolizing the recognition of Ottoman sovereignty over the Islamic world. This historic moment marked the beginning of the Ottoman Empire's dominance in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, solidifying Selim I's legacy as a great conqueror and ruler in the 16th century.
