Trans-Siberian Railway Terminus, Vladivostok, Russia (1918): In the chaotic aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution, the port city of Vladivostok in Russia's Far East held significant military importance for various factions vying for control in the Russian Civil War. The Allied Intervention of 1918-1922 saw the dispatch of troops from the Entente powers, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Japan, to the Russian Maritime Provinces to support White Russian forces against the advancing Red Army. This photograph captures the Trans-Siberian Railway terminus in Vladivostok during the early months of the intervention, in January 1918. Soldiers from the Allied expeditionary forces could be seen arriving and departing from the station, their trains carrying supplies and reinforcements to the White Russian cause. The Trans-Siberian Railway, a vital artery of transportation across the vast expanse of Russia, played a crucial role in the logistical support of the Allied intervention. The legacy of this tumultuous period in Russian history continues to resonate, as Vladivostok remains an essential port city and a gateway to the Russian Far East.
