EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the intensity and passion of the suffrage movement in Britain during the early 20th century. The W.S.P.U flag, displayed prominently in the photograph, is an original piece of history, dating back to October 1913. The flag, made of purple, white, and green cloth, was the symbol of the Women's Social and Political Union (W.S.P.U), a militant organization that fought for women's right to vote. The flag was stolen from the W.S.P.U offices and shop located on Queens Road in Bristol. The theft was in retaliation for an arson attack on the University of Bristol's boathouse in Coombe Dingle, which was blamed on W.S.P.U militants. In response, students from the university raided the shop and "ragged" the flag, as evidenced by the dedication stamped on it: "In memory of the Bristol Headquarters of the W.S.P.U. Ragged by Undergrads After the Burning of the University Pavilion by Suffragettes October 23 1913, Bravo Varsity." The flag, which measures 120cm x 70cm wide, is a poignant reminder of the fierce debates and clashes between suffragettes and their opponents during this tumultuous period in British history. The image of the flag, with its faded colors and worn edges, speaks to the determination and resilience of the suffrage movement and the sacrifices made by those who fought for women's suffrage. This original piece of history is a valuable addition to any collection, providing a unique insight into the suffrage movement and the events that shaped women's rights in Britain.
