Welcome to the British Squadron to Japan
Following the signing of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902 British Military contingents arrived in Japan. The Alliance was to run for five years before being renewed, was primarily directed against the potential shared menace posed, it was believed, by France and (most probably) Russia in the Far East. The alliance obligated either power to remain neutral if one or other found itself at war. However, should either power be obliged to fight a war against two or more powers, the other signatory was obliged to provide military aid. This postcard (produced by Mitsukoshi, Ltd. an international department store chain with headquarters in Tokyo, Japan) featuring a Japanese woman in a garden setting, is a celebration of the arrival of the British Squadron in July, 1906. Date: 1906

EDITORS COMMENTS
Welcome to the British Squadron to Japan: A Celebration of Diplomacy and Friendship This beautiful postcard, produced by Mitsukoshi, Ltd., an esteemed international department store chain based in Tokyo, Japan, captures the spirit of camaraderie and diplomacy that marked the arrival of the British Squadron in Japanese waters in July 1906. The Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902, which had been renewed earlier that year, brought British military contingents to Japan as part of a mutual defense agreement against perceived threats from France and Russia in the Far East. The postcard's image features a graceful Japanese woman, dressed in traditional attire, standing amidst a picturesque garden setting. Cherry blossoms, a symbol of the transient nature of life and the beauty of the present moment, surround her. In the background, the British flag flies proudly, while Japanese flags flutter in the breeze. The scene represents the warm welcome extended to the British Squadron by the Japanese people, as they arrived to strengthen the bond between their two nations. The Anglo-Japanese Alliance, which ran for five years before being renewed, was a significant moment in international relations. It demonstrated the value of diplomacy and cooperation in maintaining peace and stability, particularly in the face of potential external threats. This postcard serves as a testament to the enduring friendship between Britain and Japan, which continues to thrive today.
