WW1 - Home Front - The Queens Work for Women Fund
After the outbreak of WW1, many women in the textile and clothing industry had lost their jobs as export markets closed, posing a direct threat to their job prospects. The War Emergency Workers National Committee, which included leading figures from the labour movement, opposed it. Representatives of working women were called to the palace and The Queens Work for Women Fund was created. Contracts to supply clothing and other items for the Army Supply Department were issued and the Queen placed a personal order for 75, 000 woollen body belts as part of her Christmas gift to the troops. Date: circa 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the midst of World War I, the textile and clothing industry was hit hard as export markets closed, leaving many women workers unemployed and uncertain about their future. In response to this crisis, the War Emergency Workers National Committee, comprised of prominent labor leaders, advocated against the closure of these industries. In a remarkable turn of events, representatives of working women were summoned to the palace, and The Queen's Work for Women Fund was established. This innovative initiative aimed to provide employment opportunities for these women by issuing contracts to supply clothing and other essential items for the Army Supply Department. The Queen herself placed a personal order for 75,000 woollen body belts as part of her Christmas gift to the troops, demonstrating her unwavering support for the war effort and the women who were making it possible. This photograph captures the spirit of patriotism and determination that defined the Home Front during WWI. The women, dressed in their best, proudly display their finished work, their faces reflecting a sense of purpose and pride. The Union Jack flag, prominently displayed in the background, symbolizes their unwavering loyalty to their country and their commitment to the war effort.
