Poleman Juan-Pablo Montoya (Williams FW23 BMW) leads Rubens Barrichello (Ferrari F2001) and Ralf Schumacher (Williams FW23 BMW) as Michael Schumacher (Ferrari F2001) takes to the inside of the kerbs at the Rettifilo Chicane at the start. Behind mayhem ensues as Jenson Button (Benetton B201Renault) leaves his braking too late and hits Jarno Trulli (Jordan EJ11 Honda) into a spin and retirement. Everybody takes avoiding action as a result, including Mika Hakkinen (McLaren MP4/16 Mercedes) who is forced to take the slip road (far right behind Coulthard).
