EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1932, when the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) sought to entice travelers to Redcar, Yorkshire. The poster, skillfully crafted by artist Frank Newbould, showcases his talent and creativity in promoting rail travel. Newbould's artistic journey began at Bradford College of Art before he joined the War Office in 1942. However, it was during this period that he left an indelible mark on the world of design with his remarkable posters for various entities including GWR (Great Western Railway), Orient Line, and Belgian Railways. In this particular artwork, we see a picturesque scene unfolding before our eyes. Fishing boats dotting the calm waters of Redcar's coastline create a serene atmosphere that beckons visitors from far and wide. The composition is brought to life with vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail. The inclusion of people adds a touch of personal connection to the poster - men engrossed in angling activities while children excitedly explore their surroundings. It captures not just a destination but also moments of joy and leisure by the sea. As we gaze upon this stunning railway poster art piece from LNER's collection at National Railway Museum, we are transported back in time; reminded of an era when these visual masterpieces were instrumental in inspiring adventure and exploration through rail travel across Britain's scenic landscapes.
