A crater is seen in Sanica, near Sanski Most
A crater is seen in Sanica, near Sanski Most January 17, 2014. The area was once a cottage with a small lake, a fish pond and some trees. In recent months, however, it has become a crater wider than 50 meters and deeper than 30 meters. The crater is growing and is threatening more households, with some residents saying they have been forced to leave their homes because walls have began to crack. This the second of such a phenomenon in the area and experts say the craters could be caused from a sudden sinking of soil due to the existence of air pockets in the soil. Local media said authorities will carry out an extensive research on the area next month. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic (BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA - Tags: ENVIRONMENT SOCIETY TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of a natural phenomenon that has left Sanica, near Sanski Most, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in awe. Once a peaceful cottage with a serene lake, fish pond, and lush trees, this picturesque area has now transformed into an enormous crater. Stretching wider than 50 meters and plunging deeper than 30 meters, the crater's growth is causing distress among residents as it threatens more households. The alarming situation has forced some locals to abandon their homes due to cracked walls caused by the expanding crater. Experts believe that these craters may be formed from sudden soil sinking triggered by air pockets beneath the surface. As concerns escalate, authorities have announced plans for extensive research on the area next month. This isn't the first time such an event has occurred in this region; another similar phenomenon took place earlier. The photograph showcases the scale of destruction and highlights how nature can transform familiar landscapes within months. As we gaze upon this image captured by Dado Ruvic for Reuters Images, we witness a stark contrast between what once was—a vibrant countryside retreat—and what now remains—a vast void filled with uncertainty. The surrounding forest and mountains stand as witnesses to this extraordinary occurrence while clouds overhead add an atmospheric touch to this surreal scene. Intriguing yet unsettling, this print serves as a reminder of nature's power and unpredictability—an ever-present force that shapes our world in ways beyond our comprehension.
