Levant Mine, St Just in Penwith, Cornwall. 11th July 1894

Tramming with a pit pony at the 278 fathoms main tramming level. Pit ponies were rarely used in Cornwall and until they were introduced at East Pool Mine during the First World War they were unique to Levant. A steam locomotive was tried there for a few months in 1892 but abandoned in favour of ponies. They proved so successful that seven were subsequently employed. Photographer: John Charles Burrow

Transporting History - A Glimpse into Levant Mine's Past

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print from July 11th, 1894, takes us back to the remarkable world of Levant Mine in St Just, Penwith, Cornwall. The image captures a pivotal moment in mining history as it showcases the unique practice of tramming with pit ponies at the main tramming level located an astonishing 278 fathoms below ground. Pit ponies were a rare sight in Cornwall until their introduction during World War I at East Pool Mine. However, Levant was ahead of its time and had already embraced these magnificent creatures for their underground operations. In fact, they proved so successful that seven ponies were eventually employed here. The abandoned steam locomotive experiment of 1892 is also worth mentioning; after only a few months of trial runs, it was replaced by these sturdy and reliable pit ponies. This decision would shape the future transportation methods within this historic mine. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness dedicated Cornish miners working diligently alongside their trusty companions. Equipped with hurricane lamps to illuminate their path through the darkness and surrounded by timber supports known as stulls, they navigate the intricate network of tramways using specially designed wagons. This print serves as a testament to Levant Mine's innovative spirit and commitment to progress while honoring the tireless efforts of both man and beast who contributed to Cornwall's rich mining heritage.
